When does the Summer Leadership Program run?
The 2018 Program begins on Monday, April 30th and ends on Friday, August 24th. The internship is 4 months in length. This is a full time position, you must be available to start on April 30th and be available for the entire duration of the program up to August 24th.
Is the Summer Leadership Program paid?
Yes. This is a full-time, paid position.
What does the application process look like?
We have a multifaceted application process to get to know you as a candidate. As part of the application process you will be required to submit your updated CV and references as well as a short response on “why you should be selected for SLP 2018.” We are committed to selecting a diverse cohort of participants that is representative of our open and inclusive society.
Am I eligible for the Summer Leadership Program?
We are looking for young leaders from coast to coast to coast to become the next generation of leaders of the largest movement in Canadian history. If you are a politically engaged youth, and eligible to work in Canada, apply to join our team for a summer!
Can international students or foreign residence apply?
As long as you are able to work full-time in Canada, we encourage you to apply.
Do I have to be a full-time student to be eligible?
No! We are looking for young Canadians with diverse backgrounds and experiences- that includes education. You must, however, be out of high school as the program begins April 30th.
Can I get academic credit for my internship?
It may be possible to get academic credit for your internship, but not from the Liberal Research Bureau, Parliament of Canada, or Government of Canada.

Only academic departments can offer credit, and policies differ from one department to the next. Often your internship must relate directly to your major area of study, which this internship may or may not do.

If you are seeking to obtain academic credit from your SLP internship, we urge you to obtain approval from your academic institution prior to submitting your SLP 2018 application.

Is there an age limit to apply?
Last year, most Summer Leadership Program interns were between 19 and 26-years- old. We encourage any and all talented future leaders to apply to the Summer Leadership Program. As long as a potential applicant has completed high school and is available to be in Ottawa for the start of the program on April 30th.
I applied for the Summer Leadership Program last year. Can I apply again?
Yes! The Summer Leadership Program is extremely competitive, so we encourage you to re-apply if you weren’t successful last year. We would advise you to highlight your volunteer contributions, as well as new experiences and accomplishments you have achieved since you last applied.
Who should my references be? Do they need to provide a letter?
There are many people in your lives who would be valuable references to include with your application. References should be individuals who can speak positively about your skills and achievements. Your references can include, but are not limited to: current and/or past employers, managers, co-workers, leaders of non-partisan, volunteer or nonprofit organizations, professors and Members of Parliament. Your references are not required to provide a letter, however all references will be checked. Ensure that you include current contact information for each of your references.
How many references do I need to provide?
Typically you should provide 2 references with your resume. Your references should be people who will speak positively about your work.
Where will I work?
Participants will be placed in offices including the Liberal Research Bureau, Prime Minister’s Office, Minister’s Offices and with Members of Parliament in their Parliament Hill Office. In some cases, you will have the opportunity to work in both the Parliament Hill Office as well as the Constituency Office, giving you the full experience of what it’s like to work for an MP. In such cases, your internship may be divided by serving two months in the Ottawa office and two months in the Constituency Office.
What will I be doing?
Each SLP placement carries a variety of responsibilities, which could include researching, writing, attending, and reporting on Parliamentary and Government proceedings. Furthermore, SLP Participants may be responsible for general office organization and upkeep, database management, reviewing and responding to correspondence, coordinating meetings and note taking, attending various events and engagements with Members of Parliament and much more. We are committed to providing SLP Participants with a meaningful learning experience where they will be able to learn, grow and connect alongside other emerging young leaders who are passionate about our government’s agenda.
Where will I live?
It is the responsibility of the participant to find and finance their own accommodations while working in Ottawa. Upon acceptance to the Program, we will provide you with a list of resources to get you started in the process of looking for summer accommodations. Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with others to potentially secure roommates and split housing costs.

Please note: in some cases, you may be asked to work in both the Parliament Hill Office and Constituency Office for the Member of Parliament. If this is the case, you will be given sufficient notice to arrange your own accommodations.

What does a typical week look like for a Summer Leadership Program Participant?
The Summer Leadership Program is a comprehensive and intensive experience. Participants will be placed in full-time positions. In addition to this, Program participants can expect frequent speakers, training and volunteer opportunities, group projects, networking opportunities, and social events. All Program participants are expected to be in attendance at all official events.
Are Program events and opportunities mandatory?
Participants are expected to attend all official events as a part of the Summer Leadership Program. This includes speakers series presentations, training opportunities, and group project participation. Participation in this Program is an opportunity for growth, so we expect participants to be in attendance for all programming.
What is expected of me during the Summer Leadership Program?
While we strive to have fun and make the Summer Leadership Program an enjoyable program, a level of decorum and professionalism is expected. Your participation in the Program may be terminated should you not live up to the expected standards.
