Summer Leadership Program 2018
Program Overview

The Summer Leadership Program (SLP) is a four month unique internship opportunity developed to invest in the future success of young people from across the country.

The program gives young people an opportunity to contribute to Prime Minister Trudeau’s team while gaining vital job experience serving in the offices of Members of Parliament, Ministers’ Offices, The Prime Minister’s Office and the Liberal Research Bureau. SLP Participants working with Members of Parliament may have the ability to split their internship by serving two months in Ottawa and two months in the Constituency Office.

The SLP 2018 internship has been designed to develop learning objectives that are structured into the experience and guided by supervising political staff. The aim of the program is to balance the participants learning experience with the goals and responsibilities they are assigned in their respective office. Although each office will have a slightly different job description, we’re committed to providing participants with a meaningful learning experience where they will be able to learn, grow, and connect alongside other emerging young leaders who are passionate about our government’s agenda.

  • “I was very fortunate to have been a part of the Summer Leadership Program 2017. I gained invaluable experience as I was able to intern for a Member of Parliament. Some of the duties I undertook included preparing briefing notes and background research for committee work, assisting with communications and media relations, as well as attending caucus meetings with or on behalf of the Member. Being able to intern amongst the best political minds in the country was very rewarding, as I was able to be a part of a team working hard for Canadians every single day. The SLP team did an amazing job at ensuring no stone was left unturned, as interns were able to fully participate and engage with our political leaders. The SLP program is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

  • “I had the privilege of working at the Prime Minister’s Office, learning from Canada’s best and brightest. I spent my summer at the Public Appointments office within PMO, which is distinctly responsible for the appointment of Governor in Council commissions, boards, Crown corporations, agencies, and tribunals. I was lucky enough to be working at this office at the time when the Prime Minister had to appoint a new Governor General. It was the highlight of my summer to have had a role, no matter how minor, in this particular appointment. It was fascinating to learn about the inner workings of government, specifically how open, transparent, and merit-based selection processes are prioritized, including diversity factors such as women, people of colour, indigenous peoples, disabled, and LGBTQ+ communities. Working at PMO gave me a strong network of mentors and colleagues that I will cherish for years. It was through this experience that I have made some of my closest and best friends and a lifetime’s worth of memories.”

  • “As an SLP intern, I was set up to succeed when I began to work in the Hill Office of Minister Kent Hehr. The training provided in the first week of the internship prepared me to fulfill my responsibilities and reach my potential. Working as political staffer was intense and at times stressful, but that’s exactly what makes it rewarding. The hours and effort my colleagues and I put in had a real impact on the lives of Canadians. Beyond the office, you will meet an incredible group of interns and mentors that will become your closest friends. SLP was more than summer internship, it was my guide to shape my future career path and I hope it will be for you as well.”

  • “The Summer Leadership Program is a once in a lifetime learning experience. For me, it was an opportunity to practically apply my academic knowledge in political science, and gain hands on experience working within Canadian Parliament. Not only did I gain unique knowledge from my time as an intern, I felt empowered to work with an MP from my hometown and bring local issues that I am so familiar with to the federal level. In addition to daily work as an intern, SLP provided opportunities for influential politicians and government officials to speak on their career in politics. Having the opportunity to listen to their stories and hear their experiences truly was a highlight of the summer. In all, SLP was so much more than a four-month internship. It extended beyond practical work experience and ultimately reinforced my belief that engaging in politics is the best way to make significant change.”

  • “As a young person interested in politics, I knew that I was interested in seeing what life on the Hill was like, however I had no idea as to how to pursue it. A friend who had done the internship in 2016 and had subsequently secured a full-time job on the Hill suggested the opportunity to me and I took a chance and applied. Through the program I was given an opportunity to meet other like-minded young people involved in the youth movement in politics. I was also provided with unique opportunities to meet the people involved at the highest points of our federal government, including Ministers, MPs, and a personal hero of mine, Katie Telford. The Summer Leadership Program has helped me gain the skills and connections to further my political career, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a future in this field!”
